Hawaii Masons Union Education

The apprentice training program of Local 1 and Local 630 are respected not only throughout the building trades in Hawaii, but across the country as well. The two unions regularly send their state champions to the Mainland to participate in national competitions—which they frequently win. "Hawaii has a great program," says Lous Zucco, Coordinator of the Southern California Cement Masons Apprenticheship Program.

Hawaii's Masons Training Program, affiliated with community colleges throughout the islands, involves more than learning to lay brick, work with plaster and finish cement. The apporectices gain confidence, self-esteem and pride in their craft. "In apprenticeship training," says Training Coordinator Peter Iriarte, "young people learn the traditional skills so that they know the history of their craft."
